Orellana, Strbac Win Events at Towson Meet
TOWSON, MD. - Miguel Orellana and Damjan Strbac each won a pair of events as the Howard men's swim team opened its season with a loss at Towson on Saturday. The men's squad fell by the score of 151-98. The women's squad was also in action in a duel meet and fell 167-63 to Towson and 159-64 to C.W. Post.
Orellana won the 1000 yard freestyle in 10:07.93 and later took first in the 200 yard individual medley in 2:02.47.
Strbac won the 100 yard freestyle in 50:18 and also took first in the 500 yard freestyle after finishing the event in 5:27.71.
Justin Morrison also took home top honors on Saturday after winning the 100 yard butterfly in 1:06.77. Teammate Blair Matthews took home second place, finishing in 1:06.97.
Strbac went on to finish third in the 200 yard freestyle (1:52.15) while James Washington was fifth in 2:16.91.
Steven Lott and Kevin MacIntyre finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 yard backstroke while Julian Mosley took third in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:15.73). Omar McKenzie was fourth in the same event in 1:17.54.
Orellana finished as the runner-up in the 200 yard butterfuly (2:01.88). Washington and Morrison took fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 50 yard freestyle and Lott was the bronze medalist in the 200 yard backstroke (2:13.18). MacIntyre was fifth in the same event, finishing in 2:24.76.
McKenzie took third in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:49.65) while Mosley was not far behind, taking fourth in 2:50.97.
Washington finished the 500 yard freestyle in 6:24.78 and was the runner-behind Strbac in that event.
The women's squad saw first-place finishes by seniors Nzingha Murphy and Aminah Murphy.
Nzingha Murphy won the 50 yard freestyle in 24.95 while Aminah Murphy was first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:18.36).
Aminah Murphy was the runner-up in the 100 yard butterfly (1:03.14) while Polo Edwards took third in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:42.63.
Uche Monu finished the 200 yard backstroke in 2:33.88 and Nzingha Murphy was third in the 100 yard freestyle (54.72). Edwards took seventh in the same event after finishing in 58.57.
Rochelle Smith took eighth in the 50 yard freestyle (30.40) while Monu took the same spot in the 100 yard backstroke.
Smith also competed in the 200 yard freestyle (2:35.68). Nzingha Murphy took fifth in that event in 2:02.55.
The Bison are off for nearly a month, next returning to action on Nov. 1 with a home duel meet between Gardner Webb and North Carolina A&T.
