WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Howard men's and women's swimming teams opened their 2009-10 campaign at the Potomac Relay Invitational held at American University Friday evening. Competing against some of the area's finest institutions, HU turned in some terrific performances on their way to two seventh place finishes.
The evening was highlighted by the women's 500 freestyle relay as well the men's 500 freestyle relay. The Lady Bison scored 26 points with their final time of 5:02.33. Freshman E'lan Brewer led off the relay with a 50 split of 26.90. Senior captain Polo Edwards swam her 100 freestyle split in 58.51 before giving way to freshmen Chelsea Andrews and Summer Davis. Andrews looked strong in her 150 free as she split a 1:26.58 and Davis brought the relay home with a 2:10.34.
The men's 500 freestyle relay narrowly missed snatching second place from the likes of George Washington and Georgetown. Junior Damjan Strbac started the charge with a 22.87 in his 50 freestyle. Senior Brad Worrell powered his way to a 49.41 in his 100 split. Sophomore Steven Lott continued that momentum with a 1:23.66 in his 150 free. Senior captain Miguel Orellana was impressive in his 200 free, firing a 1:43.69 to give Howard a final time of 4:19.84 and a fourth place finish.
Other participants in the meet included senior Alyssa Rogers, who helped the women to a ninth place mark in the 200 freestyle relay as well as an 11th place finish in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Lauren Anthony assisted in the 12th place finish for HU in the women's 4x100 individual medley relay. On the men's side, sophomore Omar McKenzie contributed nicely in the final meet of the evening, helping the Bison take seventh place in the 200 freestyle relay while freshman Darien Washington's excellent 50 breaststroke assisted with the team's 10th place mark in the 200 medley relay.
Howard travels to Newark, Del. to face the Delaware Blue Hens this Sat., Oct. 10 for their first dual meet of the season.
