Howard Competes at George Mason Invitational

FAIRFAX, VA. - In their biggest test of the fall semester, the Howard University swim team commenced completion of the George Mason Invitational against some the finest competition around the Atlantic.

The men's and women's teams combined to swim 13 season best swims during the preliminary session of the meet that including the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and the 50 freestyle.

This surge was led by senior Miguel Orellana and freshman Chelsea Andrews. Orellana qualified for the bonus consolation heat in his 200 IM with a time of 1:59.39. Swimming in the evening, the senior captain swam an excellent final 100 to better his time at 1:59.37, good for 24^th place.

Andrews represented the women in the evening with a well-executed 50 freestyle time of 24.65, putting her in a tie for 18^th place going into the evening's session. The rookie came back strong at night with a finals time of 24.60, good for 19^th place.

The Howard relays earned their points with great swims in the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay. For the women, the team of Cachanda Evans, E'Lan Brewer, Summer Davis and Andrews swam a season best time of 1:42.13 in finishing in 13^th. The relay of Davis, Alyssa Rogers, Evans and Polo Edwards finished 14^th in the final event of the evening with a time 4:20.23 in the 400 medley relay.

The men captured the highest point total of the evening in the 200 free relay. The relay of Damjan Strbac, Orellana and Brad Worrell fired a season-best mark of 1:28.10, good for tenth place with their teammates Omar McKenzie, Steven Lott, Darien Washington and Zadok Isaacs coming in 15^th with a time of 1:34.76. To close the evening, the men's 400 medley relay of Isaacs, Orellana, Graham and Worrell powered their way to 15^th place for a final time of 3:40.16, another season best.

The Bison will continue with day two of the George Mason Invitational on Saturday morning beginning at 10AM with finals starting at 6PM.
