Matt Salerno Named Head Swim Coach

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Matt Salerno has been named the Head Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving coach at Howard University, it was announced today.

Salerno comes to HU after serving as the Assistant Swimming coach at Davidson College. He helped guide the Wildcats to a pair of second place finishes in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships (CCSA) last year while helping Davidson swimmers achieve 29 new college records during the 2008-2009 season.

Prior to Davidson, Salerno was the Head Swimming and Diving Coach at nearby Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Va. for nearly five years. He led the women's team to a 2008 Virginia High School AAA Championship (the first in the school's history in any sport) and was named Fairfax High School Coach of the Year twice during his tutelage as well as the Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year in 2008.

Salerno also served stints with the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club (Mecklenburg County, N.C.), Mason Makos Swim Club (Fairfax,Va.) and the Villa Aquatic Club (Fairfax, Va.).

He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of William and Mary in 2003 as well as being the co-captain on the Tribe Swimming and Diving team his senior year.  Currently, he is pursuing a Master's Degree in School Administration at the University of Virginia.  Salerno is also a teacher at Holmes Middle School and is married to Patricia Jane Salerno.
