written by Mattew Salerno
Through the first two days of competition, the Howard Bison swimmers have posted numerous season-best swims against some of the finest competition on the East Coast. The men currently sit in eighth place and the women are in tenth place headed into the final day of events.
The Bison have had four individuals return to the finals round. On Thursday, junior Ashley Douglas (Missouri City, TX) and sophomore Briana Dillon (Katy, TX) earned the right to swim in the consolation round of the women's 50 freestyle. Douglas posted a season-best time of 24.68, which was good for 19th place. Dillon fired a time of 24.84, which seated her in 22nd place.
The Bison men have made their way to the finals round, as well. Senior Zadok Isaacs (Cantaro Village, Trinidad and Tobago) finished in 18th place in the 50 freestyle after swimming a time of 21.83 both in the preliminary round and in the finals portion of the event. Junior Darell Hungerford (Clinton, MD) currently has the highest individual finish for the team. Hungerford swam a season-best time of 1:00.57, which earned him the right to win the consolation heat in the men's 100 breaststroke.
The highest relay finish for the women's team has come in the 800 freestyle relay. Douglas and Dillon teamed with senior E'lan Brewer (Lansing, MI) and junior Janai Ederaine (Corona, CA) to finish in 15th in a time of 8:08.97. That is the fourth fastest time in Howard history for that event.
The men's team has made it to 12th place in the 200 freestyle relay. Isaacs, along with sophomores Ben Skelding (Palmdale, CA,) Trent Popovich (Morro Bay, CA) and Matt Wilson (Murietta, CA) achieved the time of 1:31.05.
The Bison are back in action today for the final day of competition at George Mason University. The preliminary round begins at 10AM with finals starting at 6PM.
