Howard Track Athlete Qualifies For Nationals
LaClaire Carter has qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and the USA National Indoor Track and Field Championships by virtue of her performances during this past weekend at the Bucknell University Invitational. Carter, a senior from Montgomery, AL, won the long jump in 6.16 meters, meeting the NCAA provisional qualifying standard for the event. That jump also qualified her for the USA Nationals, which will be held on February 24-26 in Boston, MA. Another performer who made a strong showing at Bucknell was sophomore Lauren McNary, who captured the 400 meters with a meet record time of 55:07. Other strong performers included: Carter, 7.05 in the 55 meters, good for third place and 24.89 in the 200 meters, also good for third; a first place finish by Carter, Alyssa Johnson, McNary and Erica Day in the 4X400-meter relay with a time of 3:57.14; Joseph Claiborne, 6.46 in the 55 meters, good for third place; Daniel Kinney, 7.50 in the 55-meter hurdles, good for third place; and Khary Kenyatta and Kimary Williams, who finished first and second in the 500 meter run with times of 1:05.10 and 1:06.79, respectively. Claiborne is the starting cornerback on the Howard football team. He, along with Day and Kenyatta are all members of the 2005 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Commissioner’s All-Academic team.
