Men and Women Track Opens Outdoor Season
At North Carolina A&T
Greensboro, NC, March 18—The Howard University men’s and women’s track team opened its 2006 outdoor season at the North Carolina A&T Team Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
Despite running in less than ideal conditions for outdoor track (cold and windy), both teams had some good individual showings.
On the men side, Jacoby DuBose, Daniel Kenney, and Nicholas
Wright finished one, two and three in the 110 meter high hurdles,
each qualifying for the 2006 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
outdoor championships. Wright also finished fifth in the 400
meter hurdles.
The men also had good individual performances from David Wynn who finished second in the 1500 meter run, Joseph Claiborne who finished third in the 200 meter dash and Cordis Stanfield who finished fourth in the 800 meter run.
The Howard women’s team had several runners to finish in the top five on the day. LaClaire Carter finished fourth in the 200 meter dash while Alyssa Johnson finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles. Lauren McNary, Indira Garcia and Felicia Thompson finished fifth in the 800 meter, 1500 meter and javelin respectively.
“I’m a little disappointed in both teams performance today,” said Coach Michael Merritt. “I hope they get their heads and their hearts into competing throughout the rest of the season because the competition only gets harder from here.
Coach Merritt will look to Wright, DuBose and Stanfield on the men side and Carter and Erica Day on the women’s side as leaders for the 2006 outdoor season.
MEET NOTES: The men’s team finished
6th overall while the women’s team finished
8th overall.
TEAM NOTES: Both teams will travel to
Raleigh, NC March 24-25, to participate in the Raleigh Relays,
hosted by North Carolina State.
There are no contests upcoming.
