Howard Track Has Good Showing at Virginia Tech Invitational

Blacksburg, VA, January 13-14—The Howard University men’s and women’s indoor track teams faired well at the Virginia Tech Invitational this past weekend.

The invitational included such track powerhouses as the University of South Carolina, Clemson, Wake Forest, Maryland, Georgetown and host Virginia Tech among others.

The Bison track teams did not show any fear in the meet finishing in the top five in individual and relay races.  Sophomore sprinter Lauren McNary led the charge for the Bison women.  McNary finished third in the 400 meters producing a seasonal best, 54.86.  She was a few tenths away from finishing with provisional times for the NCAA and USA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Senior LaClaire Carter also finished the meet with a season best marks in the long jump and 60 meters.  Her 6.05 meters (19’10”) in the long jump was good enough for a fifth place finish.  She posted 7.69 in the 60 meters.

On the men side, Dante Buckner and Christopher George qualified for the 2005 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships in the 400 meters with times of 50.53 and 50.62 respectively.

The men’s 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Daniel Kinney, Buckner, George and Nicholas Wright also qualified for the MEAC indoor championships with a fifth place finish with a time of 3:19.76.

Kinney finished fourth in the 60 meters with a time of 8.16.  Kinney’s ran 8.10 in the 60 meter trials earlier that day.

Both teams will be in action locally this Saturday, January 21 as they participate in the University of Maryland Invite in Landover, Md., at the Prince Georges Sports and Learning Complex. The Bison will begin competing at 1 p.m.
