McNary, Kinney Qualify For NCAA Regionals

 

Knoxville, TN & Harrisonburg, VA-April 14-Lauren McNary ran a 54.45 in the 400-meter run and Daniel Kinney clocked in at 52.36 in the 400-meter hurdles to qualify for the 2007 NCAA Regional Outdoor Track and Field championships in Gainesville, FL, May 25-26.

            McNary and Kinney finished 10th and 6th respectively in their events at the talent-laden Sea Ray Relays on the campus of the University of Tennessee.  Kinney, who has already qualified in the 110 hurdles, came in at 11th in the event with a time of 14.44.

            "I was thrilled about Daniel's performance in Tennessee," said Howard Coach Mike Merritt.  "There was some outstanding competition in that field and for him to qualify is big."

            He continued, "Lauren has been in a slump of late.  She came out of it at the right time and I expect her confidence to be back and hopefully she will be at the NCAAs (in Sacramento, CA) in June." 

            Freshman Landria Buckley finished 11th in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.25 while Alyssa Johnson placed a respectable 13th in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.34.  Buckely has already qualified for the NCAA Regionals.

            The remaining members of the Howard men's and women's teams traveled to Harrisonburg, VA to compete in the James Madison University Open Track and Field Meet.  The highlight of the meet was Joanel Lopez who captured the shot put competition and qualified for the MEAC Outdoor championships, May 3-5.

            Some of the top performances on the women's side included: Jessica Neal winning the 1500 meters (4:46.44) and finishing fourth in the 800 (2:25.74); Lemonious Alexander, who was third in the 100 meter hurdles (14.93); Samantha Daniels, who was second in the shot put; and the 4X400 meter relay team of Violet King, Neal, Natalie Mapp and Lillian Daniels who won that event with a time of 4:16.84.

            On the men's side, Andre Williams captured the 400 meters with a time of 51.63; Mikael LaRoche, who finished second in the 200 meter run (22.88); and Stephen Small-Warner, who finished third in both the 100 and 200 meter runs with times of 11.08 and 22.92, respectively.

            "Basically, we are try to get people to qualify for the NCAA Regionals and for the MEAC," said Merritt.  "Hopefully, these meets will help us get to that level."

      The men's and women's teams travel to Baltimore, MD to participate in the Morgan State University Legacy Track Meet.
