Top Seed Florida A&M Marches Past Howard, 3-0

Boxscore

HAMPTON, VA. - Led by All-Conference First Team member Iva Lakic's match-high 24 kills, the No. 1 seed Florida A&M (16-6) rolled past No. 4 Howard (5-27) 3-0 (30-14, 30-19, 30-21) in the third MEAC Volleyball Championship quarterfinal match on Nov. 16 at Hampton's Holland Hall.

Elyssa Lee and Morgan Maxwell paced the Bison with seven kills each. Setter Gazelle d'Artois chipped in 18 assists and 12 digs while Janel James added 14 digs.

HU played well on the defensive end and picked up 16 blocks compared to five by FAMU.

"We dominated the net as we have all season," Howard Head Coach Orlando Larracuente said. "But our youthfulness caused us to lose track after we committed minor mistakes. I am proud of what we did today and we will learn from this experience."

Howard attacked the Rattlers early in game one and stayed in the game by blocking the ball well. HU went up 9-8 in game one before FAMU came back and outscored the Bison 18-2 over the next few possessions to take a 26-10 lead. The Lady Rattlers did not allow the squad to get any closer, closing the door on Howard with a kill by Lakic.

Game two opened with a FAMU offensive attack that quickly built to a 12-5 advantage. The Bison then climbed back to within three points of the lead at 13-10 and forced the Rattlers to take a timeout. Florida A&M quickly rebounded and closed the match out on a 8-3 run.

The Bison battled the Rattlers tight in game three until FAMU opened up a 10-point lead late in the stanza to run away with the victory.
