Boxscore

BALTIMORE, MD. - The Howard volleyball team defeated the Lady Eagles of Coppin State 3-0 (30-18, 30-21, 30-24) Sunday afternoon in Baltimore. With the win, the Lady Bison improved to 4-19 overall and 3-3 in MEAC play, while CSU fell to 1-18 and 0-6 in conference action.

Senior Morgan Maxwell was the only Bison to finish with double digit kills and paced HU with 18 kills and a .385 hitting percentage (18-3-39). Junior Elyssa Lee added eight kills and hit .538 while libero Monique McCoy had a team-high eight digs. Setter Gazelle d'Artois chipped in with 33 assists and seven digs.

Howard jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game one behind kills from Janel James and Maxwell.   Trailing 11-3, Coppin State put together a 9-5 run to cut the lead to 16-12. Maxwell had two kills and two service aces as the Lady Bison increased the lead to 23-14 during a 7-2 run.   The HU closed out the first game on a service ace by Gazelle D'Artois.

The second game was tightly contested throughout as neither team held more than a four-point lead until late in the game.   The Bison used a 8-2 run to close the game in posting a 30-21 win.

Howard led game three 15-8 before Coppin State stormed back and cut the lead to 16-13 before back-to-back kills by CSU's Lauren Lacey and Danyel Davis tied the match at 16-16.

The Bison pulled out to a 22-19 lead  before kills by Brittany Arvin and a service ace by Indira Laurencin brought the Eagles to within 22-21. That would not be enough, however, as Howard slowly pulled away from that point.   Three kills by Maxwell helped HU close the match with a 7-2 run.

For Coppin, Laurencin and Kanishia Sheppard each had 10 kills. Lacey had a match-high 16 digs and Shawdae Wilkes added 14.

Howard is in action this Tuesday with a non-conference matchup against James Madison at Harrisonburg, Va.
