Aden, Carlisle Combine In Howard’s OT Win Over UMES
Washington, DC—December 10--Christina Aden and Shannon Carlisle combined to score 10 of their team’s 12 points in overtime and lift Howard University to a thrilling 93-90 win over Maryland Eastern Shore in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Burr Gymnasium. It was the season conference opener for both teams and it had the flavor of a MEAC tournament final as the two teams battled all night in a nip-and-tuck affair that featured 12 lead changes and 9 ties. The Lady Bison (2-4 overall, 1-0 in the MEAC) appeared to have the game won in regulation when they took an 81-78 lead with 10 seconds remaining. But the Hawks (1-4 overall, 0-1 in the MEAC) sent the game into overtime when Kristi Veltkamp drained a three pointer from the deep left corner with 6 seconds remaining. Howard was able to get a shot off and a follow before the final buzzer sounded but came up short, thus sending the game into an extra period.
That is when Aden and Carlisle went to work. Using
penetration dribble and drawing fouls on the visitors, they proved
to be too crafty for the UMES defenders. “Chris (Aden) is probably has the strongest mind when it comes to understanding the game,” said Howard head coach Cathy Parson. “She made some big plays, but I expect that from her.” “As for Shannon, she is in the starting lineup because she has the ability to break down defenses with her quickness and athletic skills. She is also an outstanding on-the-ball defender.” Aden finished with 15 points, nine coming in the second half and in the overtime while Carlisle led all scorers with 23 points while grabbing 8 rebounds, dealing out a career-best 8 assists and getting 6 steals. Howard also some nice support from senior guard Brittney James (17 points) before she fouled out in regulation and freshman guard Lonice Kenley, who scored a career-high 15 points off the bench. The Hawks got 24 points from Veltkamp, 19 from Qiana Cheatham and 17 points and 11 rebounds from reserve Jamila Griffith. Howard will try to extend its win streak when it hosts American University on Monday at 7 p.m. in Burr Gymnasium.
