Howard Women Drop Second Straight Fairfax, VA, Nov. 21—For the second straight game, Howard fell behind by a large margin in the first half. But unlike the season-opening 84-79 loss to Tulane when it overcame a 24-point deficit and staged a furious comeback only to fall short, this time, there would be no repeat. George Mason (2-0) used an overwhelming advantage on the boards to hand Howard a 71-49 defeat at the Patriot Center. Moni Akintunde and Keyhana Wakefield each recorded double-doubles to lead the way. Akintunde poured in 24 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field and grabbed 12 rebounds while Wakefield contributed 11 points on 3-of-3 shooting while hauling in 10 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Howard (0-2) managed only 15 points from its starters,
shot only 26 percent from the field and was out-rebounded, 65-40.
The bright spot for the Lady Bison was the play of sophomore guard Christian Aden, who led her team with 13 points. Aden missed all of last season rehabilitating an injured knee and is working her way back to the form that helped her make the all-rookie team. Senior guard Ebony Lacey failed to score after tallying a career-high 17 in the opener, but she did had out 6 assists and had only one turnover. In two games, she has 14 assists and only three turnovers. Defensively, Howard had another good outing, forcing 21 George Mason turnovers and limiting the Patriots to 32 percent shooting from the field. But in the end, it was George Mason’s frontcourt play that proved to be the difference. Howard will look to get its first win of the season on Saturday when its hosts Virginia Commonwealth at 2 p.m. in Burr Gymnasium. |
