Howard Misses Chance to Move Up
After Loss To Delaware
State Dover, DE-February 11—Katreem Palmer scored a team-high 20 points to lead five players in double figures as Delaware State dominated Howard, 87-65 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women’s game at Memorial Hall. The loss dropped the Lady Bison (10-11 overall, 7-5 in the MEAC) out of a share of second place in the conference standings while the Lady Hornets (14-7 overall, 8-4 in the MEAC) improved their position with upcoming tournament three weeks away. Delaware State jumped out to an early lead and kept the pressure on Howard by breaking the vaunted Lady Bison press with relative ease, resulting in several fast break opportunities. On the defensive side, Delaware State forced Howard into one of its poorest shooting performances (26 percent on 22 of 83 shooting) in recent games. The Lady Bison entered the game, ranking among the nation’s leaders in three-point field goals made per game, but missed 13 of 14 attempts in the first half and 5 out a season-high 35 attempts for the game. With Howard having problems putting the ball in the basket, the Lady Hornets took advantage by controlling the boards with a 63-45 advantage, including a 43-23 edge in defensive rebounds. Palmer hit on 8 of 16 from the field and added 11 rebounds for a double-double while Raquel Collier (13 points), Ronke Adedoyin (12 points), Ashlee Burbage (11 points) and Shaquana Morgan (10 points) provided balanced scoring. Howard, which had eclipsed the 100-point mark in its last two outings against Norfolk State and Hampton, was led by MEAC Player of the Week Melloni Benson with 20 points as no other Lady Bison player reached double figures. NEXT UP: Howard, which had its three-game win streak snapped, will play again on Saturday, February 18 when its hosts Bethune-Cookman College at 2 p.m. in the first of four straight home games. Delaware State, which is trying to lock down the second seed, hosts dangerous Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday at 5 p.m.
