Howard Women Stage Comeback, But Fall Short In Opener Lubbock, TX, Nov. 18—The Howard University women’s team overcame a 24-point halftime deficit to get within four points, but came up short in an 84-79 loss to Tulane University in the season opener. The Lady Bison (0-1) trailed 47-27 at intermission and 51-27 early in the second half before going on a 46-26 run that cut the deficit to 77-73 with 1:17 remaining. The rally was spearheaded by the scoring of senior guard Brittany James and junior forward Melloni Benson, who each tallied 20 points and the all-around play of senior guard Ebony Lacey, who posted career highs in points (17) and assists (8). The Lady Bison appeared sluggish at the beginning, missing 31 of 40 shots for 22 percent. The Green Wave (1-0) meanwhile, came put smoking hitting on 52 percent of their shots (16 of 31). Howard rallied by quickening the tempo of the game in the second half, forcing Tulane turnovers (24) and utilizing its quickness to convert them into transition baskets. But in the end, the difference in the game was the Green Wave’s domination of the boards, where they held a whopping 61-37 advantage, including 43 on the defensive glass. The Lady Bison got a fine effort from freshman center Tamaya Daniels, who scored 6 points and grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds in her first start. Tulane, which lost to Howard, 67-59 in last season’s opener in Washington, DC, was led by Jenifer Sands, who poured in 24 and Kendra Barnes, who added 18. The Lady Bison will try to get their first win when travel to Fairfax, VA on Monday to take on George Mason University at 7 p.m.
