Carlisle Leads Howard To Win Over Lafayette

Boxscore

Washington, DC, Dec. 2—Shannon Carlisle came off the bench to score nine of her 18 points in the second half to lead Howard University to an 89-85 win over Lafayette in double overtime in a non-conference women’s game at Burr Gymnasium.

After the Leopards (3-3) tied the game at 77-all, Carlisle took over, reeling off all but two of her team’s next 10 points to help the Lady Bison (1-3) pull away for their first win of the season.

“I just did not want to lose,” said Carlisle, a sophomore guard, who missed all of last season with an injury.  “I saw that I was open and I just took advantage of the opportunities.  I really felt fresh when I came in the game.”

“She does a good job of recognizing defenses,” said Howard Coach Cathy Parson.  “She has special talent and I think that she was able to put the injury out of her head and just do what she does best.”

The game was hotly contested throughout with 10 lead changes and 7 ties as no team led by more than five.  Lafayette got an outstanding game from senior guard Lindsay Myers, who led her team with 21 points and Kristin Doherty and Vanessa Van De Venter who chipped in with 15 and 14, respectively.

Howard was able to counter with the play of junior forward Melloni Benson, who led all scorers with 23 points and senior guard Brittany James who tallied 17.

Much of the Lady Bison’s success came from its pressure defense and liberal rotation that forced 29 Lafayette turnovers.

“This was a big win for us psychologically,” explained Coach Parson.  “We went from being 0-3 to winning in double overtime.  It is going to give us a big boost in confidence.”

The Lady Bison will try to extend their win streak when they travel to Baltimore, MD to take on Loyola of MD on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
