James Leads Howard To Home Win Over American

Boxscore

Washington, DC—December 12Brittney James came out of a mini-slump to score a game-high 21 points and lead Howard University to a 74-65 win over American University in a non-conference women’s game at Burr Gymnasium.  The win was the second straight for the Lady Bison (3-4) while the Eagles fell to 3-6.

It was a closely contested game though most of the first half with neither team leading by more than five.  Howard seized control six minutes into the second half.  After American took a 42-41 lead at the 14:11 mark, James knocked down a three pointer that gave Howard a 44-42 lead that it never relinquished.  The senior guard hit on 7 of 13 shots from the field, including an impressive 4 of 5 from beyond the arc.

But James got help from senior forward Shari Johnson, who scored 8 of her season-high 12 in the second half and helped keep American University at bay.

Howard’s sophomore guard Shannon Carlisle, who was named the MEAC Player of the Week after coming off back-to-back outstanding performances, contributed to the victory with an all-around performance of 13 points, 8 rebounds, a career-high 9 assists and 5 steals.

The Eagles were led by Nicole Ryan, who scored a team-high 16 points and Abby Lipski who recorded a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Howard gets a week off before hosting the University of Richmond on December 21 at 7 p.m.

GAME NOTES:  Howard had one of its best efforts at the free throw line in recent memory, converting on 87 percent for the game, including 11 of 12 in the second half for 92 percent…the Howard full-court press forced 24 AU turnovers.
