Richmond Uses Second Half Run To Defeat
Howard Washington, DC—December 21—Kelly Roche scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the second half and DeUnna Hendrix added 10 of her 12 after intermission to help the University of Richmond come from behind to defeat Howard, 78-70 in a non-conference women’s game at Burr Gymnasium. The Spiders (4-6) trailed by as may as 13 in the first half, but rallied on the scoring of Roche and Hendrix who combined for 16 points during a 19-8 run to start the second half that turned a 40-30 halftime deficit into a 49-48 advantage at the 13:00 mark. The two teams exchanged leads before a late 7-0 run by Richmond gave the visitors the lead for good at 74-70. The Spiders knocked down four free throws to close out the scoring. “They made some adjustments in the second half,” explained Howard Coach Cathy Parson. “We were playing a 1-2-2 zone and it was effective the first half. They got better movement and were able to hit some shots from the baseline.” The Lady Bison (3-5) got off to a sizzling start due to the play of sophomore guard Shannon Carlisle, who tallied 8 of her team-high 16 points while creating havoc with 3 assists and four steals and from freshman guard Lonice Kenley, who scored 11 of her 14 points off the bench. “Shannon was able to create opportunities for her teammates and herself, but Richmond kept two people in front of her the second half and it affected her game,” added Parson. Howard shot a respectable 47 percent in the first half, but managed only 31 percent in the second while Richmond connected on 60 percent in the final 20 minutes. The Lady Bison full-court pressure forced 25 Spider turnovers. NEXT UP: Howard travels to Jersey City, NJ to take on the Peahens of St. Peter’s College on Friday, December 23 at 7 p.m.
