James Leads Howard To Home Win Over South Carolina State

Washington, DC—January 5— Brittany James scored a game-high 25 points and pulled in seven rebounds as Howard ran past South Carolina State, 77-58, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match-up in Burr Gymnasium.

The Lady Bison, (5-6, 2-0 MEAC), took control of the game from tip, starting with a 6-0 run and going up by as many as 17, 35-18, at the 2:33 mark of the first half.  The Lady Bison maintained their intensity, taking a 15 point lead into the half, 37-22.

“Brittany James is really the unsung hero of our team,” said Lady Bison head coach Cathy Parson.  “She gets us going on both ends of the court by doing the little things.”

James appears to have South Carolina State’s number as she had a career game versus the Lady Bulldogs last season scoring 33 points off a MEAC record nine three-pointers.

The Lady Bulldogs, (3-7, 1-1 MEAC), managed to put together a mini 6-0 at the 17:35 mark of the second half, but the Lady Bison quickly gathered their composure. 

“The intensity of our defense really bothered them tonight,” said Parson. “We relaxed a little bit in the second half, but we were able to regroup.”

The Lady Bison managed to cruise past the Lady Bulldogs with only two players in double-figures.  Sophomore Christina Aden was the only other player to score in double-figures as she contributed 10 points in the win. 

Melaney Denson was the only Lady Bulldog to score in double-figures with 12 points.  Jenell Moore pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Howard will travel to Norfolk, VA to take on the Spartans of Norfolk State.

GAME NOTES:  Howard shot 87 percent from the charity stripe and out-rebounded the Lady Bulldogs, 43-41.
