HOWARD COME UP SHORT AGAINST HAMPTON Hampton, Va.—Howard saw its three game win streak come to a screeching halt as they fell to Hampton University, 61-74, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match-up at the Hampton Convocation Center. This is the first conference loss for the Lady Bison whose record stands at 6-7 overall and 3-1 in the MEAC. The teams matched up well to start the game, exchanging baskets for the first 4½ minutes and then Hampton took the lead for good at the 13:47mark of the first half, 8-6. The Lady Pirates would go up by as many as 18 in the first half and would enjoy a 15 point lead going into the locker room at the half. The teams exchanged baskets to start the second half then the Lady Bison appeared to have gained the momentum forcing several turnovers which allowed them to go on a 16-2 run to pull within 2 points, 46-44, with a little under 12 minutes remaining. The run would not be enough as Hampton quickly regained the momentum going up by 12 with just over five minutes remaining and eventually winning by 13. Monica Rogers led the charge for the Lady Pirates (2-11, 2-2
MEAC) recording a double-double, 20 points-12 rebounds. Despite the poor shooting from the field, 31 percent, the Lady Bison had three players to score in double-figures led by Melloni Benson with 19. Shannon Carlisle and Christina Aden contributed 18 and 14 respectively. Benson also led the Lady Bison in rebounding with 7. The Lady Bison will return to the hardwood this Saturday, January 14 when they host the Lady Hornets of Delaware State at 2 p.m. GAME NOTES: Senior Brittany James, who was named this week’s MEAC Player of the Week, was held to a season low 4 points…the Lady Bison scored 23 points off the Lady Pirates 30 turnovers.
