Carlilse Leads Howard To Home Win Over UMES Washington, DC-March 3--Shannon Carlisle scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the second half to lead Howard University to a 72-56 win over Maryland Eastern Shore in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's game at Burr Gymnasium. The win was the second straight for the Lady Bison (7-22 overall, 7-11 in the MEAC) Howard took advantage of the absence of UMES starting point guard Danielle Cooper, who has been suspended indefinitely. With Cooper, who leads the team with 108 assists, out of the lineup, the Lady Bison were able to force a whopping 41 turnovers with their pressure defense. UMES's propensity to turn the ball over allowed Howard to open up a 16-point lead in the second half, but UMES re-grouped on the scoring of April McBride, who tallied 15 of her team-high 17 points after the break and cut the deficit to 48-44 at the 9:25 mark. Then Carlisle went to work and scored five of her team's next seven points and take a 10-point lead. "We knew that they were going to make a run and it was just of question of when," said Parson. "We got some big shots from our wings. Shannon, Asha (Santee) and Lonice (Kenley) were able to come through when we needed them and that is big going into the tournament." Santee finished with 13 points while Kenley came off the bench to score nine points-all on three pointers-- in the second half. In addition to her 19 points, Carlisle added four assists and two steals while also leading the Lady Bison fast break and creating havoc for the UMES guards. "She's developing into a player who has the vision to make people around her better," said Parson of her floor general. "She put us in a position to win." The Lady Hawks got 13 points from Jasmine Speed and 12 from Qiana Cheatham. Speed (11 rebounds) and McBride (10 rebounds) recorded double doubles and helped UMES out-rebound Howard, 50-38.
