Carlisle, Daniels Lead Howard To Road Win Over B-CC

Daytona Beach, FL-February 17, 2007--Shannon Carlisle scored 20 of her game-high 31 points in the second half and Tamaya Daniels recorded a double-double to lead Howard University to a 79-73 win over Bethune-Cookman College in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's game at Moore Gymnasium.

A 5-7 junior guard from Indianapolis, IN, Carlisle hit on six of her first seven shots to start the second half, including 3-for-3 on three pointers to help the Lady Bison (5-18 overall, 5-8 in the MEAC) go on a 15-4 run.

"We talked to Shannon about being a little more assertive in the second half," said Assistant Coach Felicia Kemp, who coached in place of head coach Cathy Parson. Parson was not available.  "She got into a groove and it gave us a big boost.  She played very well today."  Carlisle also grabbed 5 rebounds, handed out 3 assists and recorded 6 steals.

Daniels, who has been starting in place of injured Melloni Benson (foot injury), has been coming on of late.  The 6-2 sophomore from Syracuse, NY, hit on 6 of 12 from the field and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds.

"We need that kind of effort from Tamaya every game," said Kemp, who served as head coach at Morgan State before coming to Howard.  "She is getting more comfortable out there and it is beginning to show in her performance."

The Howard bench also played a role in the win, especially seniors Courtney Smiley (13 points) and Sequoya Moore (8 points, 6 rebounds), who combined for 21 points and 9 rebounds off the bench.

The Lady Wildcats (4-21 overall, 1-13 in the MEAC) got outstanding efforts from Cassandra Calcagno (22 points, 11 rebounds) and Natasha Ferguson (19 points, 8 rebounds), but 28 turnovers and a lack of production from the bench (14 points) was too much to overcome.

"The plan was to put pressure on them and force them to play other people," said Kemp.  "That's how we were able to make that run."

NEXT UP:  Howard travels to Tallahassee, FL to play Florida A&M on Monday at 5:30 pm while B-CC hosts Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday at 5:30 pm.
