Howard Women Remain Winless After Road Loss To SC State
Orangeburg, SC-January 6-Christina Aden scored a team-high 20 points and Courtney Smiley added 10 but it was not enough to offset a balanced attack as Howard University fell, 75-60 to South Carolina State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's game at Smith-Hamilton-Middleton Center. The Lady Bison (0-13 overall, 0-3 in the MEAC) stayed close early, but again some cold shooting (30 percent in the first half) and a lack of presence in the paint proved to be their undoing. Aden, a 5-7 junior guard, tallied 14 of her points in the second half, but the Lady Bulldogs (3-10 overall, 2-1 in the MEAC) got monster games from Rasheeda Jones (career-high 20 points, 11 rebounds) and Brittany Baity (13 points, 8 assists), who combined for 27 of SC State's 37 second half points. Sophilla Hipps scored 15 and Kristin Johnson 10 off the bench for SC State, which had four players in double figures. Howard was hurt by the absence of junior guard and leading scorer (15 points per game) Shannon Carlisle, who got into early foul trouble and never got untracked. Senior forward Melloni Benson grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds but it did little to offset a 50-34 deficit on the boards. Smiley, a senior forward, contributed 10 points as no other Lady Bison player scored in double figures. GAME NOTES: Reyna Gross had one of her best efforts of the season, coming off the bench to score 4 points, grab 5 rebounds and deal out 4 assists in 24 minutes. NEXT UP: Howard will try to get its first win when it takes on the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T on Monday at 6 pm in the Corbett Sports Center.
