Howard Comeback Falls Short in Loss To Delaware State

Dover, DE-January 13---Courtney Smiley and Melloni Benson each recorded double doubles but it was not enough to keep Howard University from remaining winless as Delaware State pulled away to a 58-48 win over the Lady Bison in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's game at Memorial Hall.

Howard (0-15 overall, 0-5 in the MEAC) rallied from a 14-point second half deficit on the scoring of Smiley and Benson, who combined for 18 points after intermission.  The Lady Bison cut the deficit to five with a little over three minutes left, but the Lady Hornets (6-8 overall, 2-2 in the MEAC) got five points from Raquel Collier down the stretch to get the win.

Smiley finished with career highs in both points (14) and rebounds (14) while Benson finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Howard's leading scorer Shannon Carlisle got into early foul trouble and it proved to be costly as the Lady Bison scored only 13 points in the first half on 5 of 26 shooting (19 percent).  Carlisle finished with 10 points, almost seven under her average.

The Lady Bison were also hurt my mistakes as they committed 25 turnovers.

Delaware State was led by Collier with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Selena Galloway, who added 13 off the bench.

NEXT UP:  Howard will try to gets its first win when it hosts Bethune-Cookman College on Saturday, January 20 at 2 pm in Burr Gymnasium.
