Howard Falls Short In Game Against Morgan State

Baltimore, MD-February 26-Whitney Johnson scored 17 of her game-high 25 points to help Morgan State get by Howard University, 71-62 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's game at Hill Fieldhouse.

The Lady Bison (5-21 overall, 5-11 in the MEAC) played the Lady Bears close through most of the game and actually led at one point before trailing 28-25 at the half.  Both teams suffered from poor shooting and sloppy play in the first 20 minutes.

Then the play improved in the second half as Howard senior forward Courtney Smiley began to assert herself, tallying 14 of her team-high 20 points after the break.

But Morgan State was able to eventually pull away on the all-around play of Johnson and the inside play of center Britney Griffin, who powered her way to 15 points and 16 rebounds.  The Lady Bison's problems were compounded by the fact that team-leading scorer Shannon Carlisle, had an off game, missing 17 of 20 shots and scoring only 9 points, almost 8 under her average.

Asha Santee was able to pick up some of the slack with 12 points, but none coming in the second half. Ultimately, Howard was not able to overcome a 60 percent shooting performance (15 of 25) in the second half and a 60-49 rebounding advantage by Morgan State (15-11 overall, 10-6 in the MEAC).

Carlisle was able to reach the 1,000-point plateau and her five steals added to her school record in that category.

NEXT UP: Howard will try to snap its three-game slide when it travels to Norfolk, VA to take on the Lady Spartans of Norfolk State on Wednesday at 6 pm while Morgan State travels to Daytona Beach, FL to take on the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman College at 5:30 pm in Moore Gymnasium.
