Lady Bison Still Winless After Road Loss To NC A&T

Greensboro, NC-January 8-The Howard University women's basketball team fell behind big early and then staged a furious rally before finally succumbing to North Carolina A&T, 87-73 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's game at the Corbett Sports Center.

            The Lady Aggies (7-6 overall, 2-0 in the MEAC) built an early lead that once reached 20 points before the Lady Bison (0-14, 0-3 in the MEAC) worked the deficit to 13 at 40-27 at intermission.

            Junior guard Shannon Carlisle helped spark a comeback attempt by scoring all 19 of her points in the second half.  Her scoring, along with that of backcourt mate Christina Aden (17 points, 7 in the second half) and senior forward Melloni Benson (14 points) helped Howard twice get to within 5, but each time, NC A&T would answer.

            Howard did not help itself as it shot poorly (31 percent), missed some easy scoring attempts with the game within reach and committed costly turnovers (22) that allowed the Lady Aggies to get easy baskets.

The Lady Bison did however have an outstanding day at the foul line, shooting a season-best 87 percent (20 of 23).

            But NC A&T's balanced attack that featured five players in double figures was too much.  Brittany James-Taylor led her team with 17, Ahmad Williams was next with 16, followed by Amber Bland with 15, Ta'Wuana Cook with 14 and reserve Shantar Waddell with 13.

            Senior forward Courtney Smiley had one of her better games at Howard as she just missed a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds. But again the Lady Bison failed to get production out of its bench as it was outscored, 19-9.

NEXT UP:  Howard will try to get into the win column on Saturday when it travels to Dover, DE to take on the Lady Hornets of Delaware State at 2 pm.
