Rams Rally to Defeat Bison 63-61
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Rene Rector scored 24 points, including two key baskets down the stretch, and Winston-Salem State overcame a seven point second-half deficit to defeat Howard 63-61 in the Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
Trailing by two, Rector converted a layup giving the Lady Rams a tie with Howard at 57-57 with 1:33 left in the game.
Asha Santee, who led HU with a team-high 14 points, gave the Bison a one-point lead with a free throw with 1:24 to play. The Rams fouled Tamaya Daniels who converted one of two free throws for a 61-58 Howard lead with 32 seconds left.
On WSSU's next possession, Nora Campbell hit a jumper that cut the lead down to one at 61-60 with 21 seconds remaining.
Rector hit a layup and gave the Rams the lead for good at 62-61 with three seconds left in the game.
Reyna Gross missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer.
Winston-Salem State improved to 1-12 overall while Howard dropped to 2-13 overall.
Daniels added her fourth double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Shannon Carlisle added 13 points for HU.
Vontisha Woods chipped in 15 points and 14 boards for WSSU and Jalesa Byrd contributed 10 rebounds.
The Lady Bison return to MEAC action on Monday with a MLK matchup against South Carolina State at 4pm in Orangeburg, S.C.
