WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Perennial powerhouse Maryland, home games with Jacksonville and LIU and a holiday tournament at Monmouth highlight the 2009-10 Howard women's basketball schedule.

"I am really excited about our schedule for the upcoming season," said head coach Niki Reid Geckeler. "Our non-conference schedule is challenging and will give the team a lot of experience as we prepare for conference play. Night in and night out we will be tested and I look forward to seeing the team develop throughout the year."

The 2009-10 edition of the women's basketball team will look to build on its success from a year ago, which doubled its win total from 2007-08 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament. All-MEAC second team selection Zykia Brown, who finished third in the league in scoring with 17.3 points per game and top-10 in assists per game and free-throw percentage, leads the cast of returning players.

The Lady Bison open the season with a home decision against cross-town rival American on Nov. 13. Howard travels to Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 16 before returning home for a pair of games against LIU (Nov. 21) and Jacksonville (Nov. 25).

Howard makes the short trip to College Park, Md. for a matchup against the Terps on Nov. 27 before facing off with Radford in a road contest on Nov. 30.

HU returns to Burr Gymnasium for its conference home opener when it welcomes Hampton on Dec. 5.

After a two-game road stint at George Mason (Dec. 12) and Central Michigan (Dec. 19), the Lady Bison head to West Long Branch, N.J. for the Monmouth Tournament on Dec. 29-30.

The team will conclude non-conference action on the road when it travels to face Colgate on Jan. 5.

Howard takes on MEAC opponents Morgan State and Coppin State during a two-game homestand on Jan. 9 and 11, respectively. HU will take its first league road trip when it travels to face North Carolina A&T on Jan. 16 and Norfolk State on Jan. 18.

The Lady Bison welcome Florida A&M on Jan. 23 and Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 25. The team travels to Princess Anne, Md. to face Maryland Eastern Shore on Jan. 30.

Howard will take its longest conference road-swing of the season when it travels to face Delaware State on Feb. 1, Winston-Salem State on Feb. 6 and South Carolina State on Feb. 8. After returning to the Mecca to host the Aggies on Feb. 13 and the Spartans on Feb. 15, the Bison will head to Florida to face the Rattlers on Feb. 20 and the Wildcats on Feb. 22.

HU closes out its home schedule on Feb. 27 with a matchup against the Lady Hawks. The Bison conclude the season on the road at Hampton on March 4.
