TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - Tamoria Holmes' trey with 34 seconds remaining lifted Howard to a 49-48 come from behind victory over Florida A&M (FAMU) Saturday evening at the Al Lawson Center. The win completes a season sweep of the Rattlers and move the Bison into sole possesion of the fifth spot in MEAC standings.
Howard trailed by nine with just over 15 minutes remaining before the Bison mounted a 10-0 run over the next 10 minutes. A basket by Saadia Doyle with 5:58 remaining gave Howard a 44-43 lead, its first lead of the second half.
Portia Deterville hit a jumper and pushed the Bison lead to three, but Antonia Bennett and Tameka McKelton combined to give Florida A&M a two-point lead at 48-46 with 2:26 remaining.
The score would remain 48-46 for the next two minutes until Zykia Brown found Holmes at the left corner with just under 35 seconds remaining in the contest. Down by two, Holmes found the back of the net for her only basket of the night.
Howard (13-12, 8-5 MEAC) received a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds from Doyle, her 16th double-double of the season. Brown added 11 points and Deterville pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds. The Toronto, Canada native added seven points on the offensive end. Cheyenne Curley-Payne chipped in nine points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
FAMU (15-9, 7-6 MEAC) got 12 points from McKelton. Bennett added 10 points and 11 rebound and Deidra Jones contributed 11 points.
The Bison will look to continue its winning ways on Monday against Bethune-Cookman. Game time against the Lady Wildcats is slated for 5:30 pm at the Ocean Center.
