HACKENSACK, N.J. - Fairleigh Dickinson connected on 32-of-36 free-throws and forced 15 second-half fouls en route to a 76-57 victory over Howard Monday evening at Stratis Arena.
HU (0-2) held the advantage in most other areas including field goals made (21), rebounds (45), assists (12) and blocks (six).
The Bison bench outscored FDU 24-5 as freshman Tamoria Holmes (Durham, N.C.) led the way with 12 points. Senior Charae Baulkman (Newark, N.J.) and junior Amanda Edwards (Toronto, Canada) chipped in four points apiece and Julee' O'Neal (Durham, N.C.) added three points.
Fresman Kara Smith (Chicago, Ill.) finished with 13 points and six rebounds, and junior Zykia Brown (Riverdale, Md.) tied the team-high with 13 points.
Howard outscored Fairleigh Dickinson 24-4 in second chance points thanks to 26 offensive team rebounds. HU limited FDU to eight offensive boards. Redshirt freshman Saadia Doyle (Atlanta, Ga.) led all players with a game-high 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive end.
The Knights (1-1) jumped out to a 16-7 advantage early in the first half. Jordan Sykes scored 15 points in the first half to pace Fairleigh Dickinson, who went into the break with the 37-26 lead.
Sykes did most of her damage at the line as she made 9-of-10 free throw attempts in the first half.
The second half saw the Knight lead balloon to as many as 21-points. Free-throws proved to be the difference as Howard went 5-of-10 from the charity stripe compared to 16-of-18 by Fairleigh Dickinson.
Alyssa Mayrose paced FDU with 20 points. Sykes and Mariyah Laury added 19 points apiece.
Howard returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 21 with a home contest against LIU. Game time against the Blackbirds is slated for 2pm at Burr Gymnasium.
