JACKSONVILLE, FL – Saadia Doyle and Cheyenne Curley-Payne combined to score 42 of Howard's 52 points in its loss to Jacksonville (3-1) on Tues. Nov. 23 With the loss, the Lady Bison drop to 2-3 on the season. They will travel to Storrs to participate in The World Vision Challenge hosted by UConn on Thurs. Nov. 26.
Doyle and Curley-Payne scored all of the HU's 30 second-half points. Howard and JU traded baskets for the first five-plus minutes of the second stint. The score was knotted 31-31 until a pair at the line by the Dolphin's Gigi Thomas ignited a 14-4 run to give HU its largest deficit of the game, 45-35, midway through the period. The Lady Bison responded by rattling off eight straight – all from Doyle – to pull to within two, 45-43, at the 8:15 mark. A Curley-Payne free-throw at 7:07 brought the margin to 47-46, but the Dolphins pushed the spread to 55-48 with 3:30 remaining in regulation. JU held on to the slim advantage for the rest of the game.
Doyle finished with a game-high 25 points and 14 boards for her third double-double of the season. Payne tallied 17 points behind 6-of-11 shooting– including a perfect 5-for-5 from the stripe – and pulled down four off the glass in 33 minutes of action.
The first half was a low scoring affair as neither team shot well. The Lady Bison held the Dolphins to 22 first-half points – 17 points under their average.
Jacksonville lead 12-10 at the 8:24 mark until an Adelle Walton basket sparked a 12-3 run to give Howard a seven-point cushion, 22-15, at the 3:37 mark. Walton scored six points in the run. The Lady Bison would not score for the remainder of the half as JU ended the first 20 with seven unanswered points to tie it at 22-22.
As a team, the Lady Bison outscored the Dolphins in the paint 28-18. Howard also scored 17 points off 11 Jacksonville miscues.
HU shot 33.3 percent (20-for-60) from the floor and a steller 92.3 percent (12-for-13) from the foul line. Jacksonville came into tonight's contest averaging 41 percent from the field, but was held to just a 32.7 shooting clip (18-for-55) tonight.
For JU, Thomas recorded 17 points and eight rebounds. Taneske Richardson finished with 16 points and 13 points on the night.
