HU defeats Navy by 10 to stay undefeated at home

WASHINGTON, D.C---December 11--- After an upset in last year's meeting with the U.S. Naval Academy, the Howard Women's Basketball team came up victorious in defeating the Midshipmen 60-50, a non-conference matchup, at Burr Gym on December 11.

The Lady Bison extended its win streak to three with Tamoria Holmes leading HU with a season-high of 27 points (12-21 from the field) and four steals. Saadia Doyle added 14 points.

To start the match, Navy came out the gate going on a 17-6 run. By the 10:02 mark, Howard found some momentum from a basket by Holmes improving the score to 17-8. From there, HU climbed its way back into the game. With 1:46 remaining in the first period, HU had went on a 17-7 run to capture its first 25-24 lead of the game. Howard finished up the first stint leading by three, 27-24.

Halftime notes: HU went 8-31 (25 percent) from the field, 1-7 (14 percent) from the three-point line and 10-10 from the free throw line. Howard scored 11 points from Navy's 11 turnovers and two turnovers. Navy was 9-25 (36 percent) from the field, 2-8 (25 percent) from the three-point line and 4-6 (66 percent) from the free-throw line.

In the second period, Howard continued to stretch the lead, 41-30, with 10:28 left in the ball game. To pull away from Navy, the Lady Bison spread the margine to 16 points by the 5:58 mark. Navy tied up its shoe laces to shrink the lead to six, 49-43, in just four-plus minutes. Howard held on to push away from Navy in a final of 60-50.

Navy was led by Alix Membreno and Audrey Bauer who both finished with 11 points. Bauer also contributed a team high of eight rebounds.  Jade Geif and Chantel Lavender both chipped in with eight points.

Game notes: HU ended with eight turnovers, while forcing Navy into 19. Howard scored 24 points from Navy's turnovers, while Navy's bench outscored Howard 19-7.

Howard will look to continue its winning streak against ACC opponent, Wake Forest, in Winston Salem, North Carolina for another non-conference matchup on Sunday, Dec 18. The game is slated for 6:30 p.m.
