Howard vs. Bowie State Game Notes

WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.howard-bison.com) – The Howard University women's basketball team will play its first home game of the 2012-13 season on Friday, Nov. 23 in Burr Gymnasium on the HU campus at 7:00 p.m.

Howard opened the season on the road with pairs of contests in Pennsylvania (St. Francis and No.8 Penn State) and Illinois (DePaul and Northwestern).

In their loss to Northwestern, blue and white senior Saadia Doyle attained her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  Freshman Imani Bailey, who has spent most of debut season injured, made her mark on the season with a career-best 11 points from the bench.

HU senior Cheyenne Curley-Payne, who shot 60 percent (3-of-5) from behind the arc, tallied nine points, while fellow senior Kara Smith, who joined Doyle with a perfect outing from the charity stripe, gathered seven points and four assists.

Collectively, the Lady Bison defense held the Wildcats to a season-low scoring outing with 61 points.

• Finished second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference

• Fell 59-56 OT to Virginia during the WNIT in 2012

• Howard concluded its stint in Chicago. Ill., with losses to DePaul and Northwestern

• Freshman Imani Bailey provided a demonstrative performance with career-high 11 points at NW

• On the season, the Lady Bison average 54.5 points per game, 32 percent from the field, 29 percent from the long range, and 60 percent from the free-throw line

Scouting Bowie State

• Renard Smith is in his second season at Bowie State

• The Bulldogs are members of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association

• Bowie State is 2-1 so far this season and enters Burr with a 57-75 loss to Grand Valley State from Sunday, Nov. 18 during the UDC Classic

• Brooke Miles led the team with game-high 12 points, while Channell Mackey finished with 10 points

• On the night, BSU shot 26 percent from the field, 36 percent from the three-point range and 79 percent from the free-throw line

• BSU averages 60.3 ppg., while going 35 percent from the field, 32 percent from three-point range and 61 percent from the free-throw line

Consecutive Honors for Doyle

Saadia Doyle was name Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.  The honor was announced on Thursday, Nov. 1.

Along with Doyle's accolades, the Lady Bison were predicted to finish first in the MEAC this 2012-13 season.

Major News

Among 340 mid-major Division I institutions in the country, the Lady Bison ranked 12th above Richmond (Atlantic 10), Harvard (Ivy) and Central Michigan (Mid-American) on the preseason list.
