WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.howard-bison.com) – February 8 – Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference continues on Saturday, Feb. 9 as the Howard University women's basketball teams takes on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Burr Gymnasium at 2:00 p.m., in Washington, D.C.

Thus far on HU's four-game homestand, the Lady Bison are 1-1, with a Monday, Feb. 4 buzz-beating 54-53 loss to South Carolina State. 

With 22-second remaining, Howard displaced two one-and-one options from the charity stripe, giving SCSU the cushion necessary to monopolize on three consecutive layup attempts for HU's third MEAC loss.

Senior Saadia Doyle led the contest with 13 points, while freshman Imani Bailey, who shot of 2-of -3 from the long range, finished with 12 points, and Cheyenne Brown's notched a career-high 10 points.  Senior Cheyenne Curley-Payne tallied nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists. 

Howard is 12-9 on the season, 6-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, 6-7 on the road and 6-2 at home.

• Niki Reid Geckeler is in her fourth season as head coach

• Finished second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (2011-12)

• Saadia Doyle is eighth in the country in scoring with 21.9 points per game and 78^th in rebounding with 9.0 pg.

• Cheyenne Curley-Payne is 23^rd in the country in assists with 5.6 per game and 56^th in steals with 2.75 pg.

• Saadia Doyle leads the MEAC in Player of the Week honors and scoring

• This is the first and only regular-season meeting with Maryland Eastern Shore

• Howard has defeated MEAC foes: Delaware State (54-40), Coppin State (67-54), Norfolk State (56-45), N.C. A&T (44-42), NCCU (56-30), and Savannah State (53-41)

• HU welcomes SCSU after conquering Savannah State 53-41 on Saturday, Feb. 2

• Cheyenne Curley-Payne distributed a season-high 12 assists, scored 11 points, pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and finished with three steals

• Saadia Doyle led in points with 16

• On the season, the Lady Bison average 54.1 points per game, 35 percent from the field, 28 percent from the long range, and 64 percent from the free-throw line

Scouting Maryland Eastern Shore

• Fred Batchelor is in his ninth season at UMES

• The Lady Hawks are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference

• UMES is currently 6-12 overall, 2-5 in the MEAC, 5-4 at home, and 1-5 on the road

• Maryland Eastern Shore goes head-to-head with HU after a 72-53 win over North Carolina Central on Monday, Feb. 4

• Shawnee Sweeney led with 17 points, while Jessica Long finished with 11 points and Sha-Kiyla Finney tallied 10 points

• The Lady Hawks shot 34 percent from the field, 56 percent from the three-point range and 44 percent from the free-throw line

Consecutive Honors for Doyle

Saadia Doyle was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.  The honor was announced on Thursday, Nov. 1.

Along with Doyle's accolades, the Lady Bison were predicted to finish first in the MEAC this 2012-13 season. 

Major News

Among 340 mid-major Division I institutions in the country, the Lady Bison ranked 12th above Richmond (Atlantic 10), Harvard (Ivy) and Central Michigan (Mid-American) on the preseason list.
