WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.howard-bison.com) – February 9 – The Howard University Lady Bison women's basketball team will conclude the four-game homestand on Monday, Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in Burr Gymnasium on the HU campus.

Along with Monday night's regulatory action, the Lady Bison will show their support for breast cancer awareness with their annual "Think Pink" game in honor of "Play 4Kay Week." 

Kay Yow is the former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, who lost her 22-year battle with breast cancer on Jan. 4, 2009.  Yow was a past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coach Association (WBCA).

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to honor Yow, show support for survivors, those battling breast cancer, and to spread awareness.

Howard hosts Morgan State after defeating the University of Maryland Eastern Shore 59-30 on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Blue and white senior Cheyenne Curley-Payne topped the squad with 17 points and seven assists, while Saadia Doyle led the rebounding campaign with 11 rebounds and two steals.  Kara Smith was one-point shy of scoring on double-figures with nine points, while Julee O'Neal came off the bench as the third leading scorer with seven points.

In the seventh conference win of the season, Howard shot 30 percent from the field (20-of-66), 36 percent from the long range (10-of-28), and 69 from the charity stripe (9-of-13).

Howard is 13-9 on the season, 7-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, 6-7 on the road and 7-2 at home. 

Lady Bison Bites

• Niki Reid Geckeler is in her fourth season as head coach

• Finished second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (2011-12)

• Saadia Doyle is 10th in the country in scoring with 21.5 points per game and 75th in rebounding with 9.0 pg.

• Cheyenne Curley-Payne is 22nd in the country in assists with 5.6 per game and 55th in steals with 2.75 pg.

• Saadia Doyle leads the MEAC in Player of the Week honors and scoring

• This is the first and only regular-season meeting with Morgan State

• Howard has defeated MEAC foes: Delaware State (54-40), Coppin State (67-54), Norfolk State (56-45), N.C. A&T (44-42), NCCU (56-30), Savannah State (53-41), and UMES (59-30)

• HU welcomes MSU after overpowered UMES 59-30 on Saturday, Feb. 8

Scouting Morgan State

• Donald Beasley is the head women's basketball coach at Morgan State

• The Lady Bears are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference

• MSU is currently 8-15 overall, 5-5 in the MEAC, 6-5 at home, and 2-10 on the road

• In head-to-head action with Coppin State, Morgan State defeated CSU 74-61

• Bianca Jarrett tallied a team-high 18 points, while Tracey Carrington and Whitney Southerland notched 12 points apiece and Chyress Lockhart finished with 11 points

• The Lady Bears shot 45 percent from the field, 44 percent from the three-point range and 68 percent from the free-throw line

Consecutive Honors for Doyle

Saadia Doyle was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.  The honor was announced on Thursday, Nov. 1.

Along with Doyle's accolades, the Lady Bison were predicted to finish first in the MEAC this 2012-13 season.

Major News

Among 340 mid-major Division I institutions in the country, the Lady Bison ranked 12th above Richmond (Atlantic 10), Harvard (Ivy) and Central Michigan (Mid-American) on the preseason list.
