Momentum Break For Bowling

DOVER, DE - After a remarkable defeat over previously top-ranked Vanderbilt, the Howard bowling team brought their momentum to a halt after running into a six-game shutout at the annual Capital Classic Bowling tournament hosted by No. 17 Delaware State University this past weekend.

Howard (23-66, 5-15 MEAC) would go up against two of the nine teams ranked within the nation's top 20 – No. 10 Adelphi (41-18) and No. 12 Vanderbilt (13-17) – both of whom the Lady Bison met at their previous tournament, the Kutztown Invite. Adelphi outscored Howard 764-652. Meanwhile, the Lady Bison were unable to capitalize on their previous upset over Vanderbilt as they fell, 587-751.

Junior Briana Uzzell who leads the team in pins taken per game at 179.5, was unable to reproduce her previous performance at the Kutztown Invite where she bowled a season-high of 256. The highest bowl she would make at the DSU Invite was 177, marking her lowest individual best of the 2010-11 season.

Although this wasn't Uzzell's best performance, she still finished second on the Bison in pinfall (833) behind freshman Alexandria Johnson who knocked over 881 pins.

Amidst the Bison's six consecutive losses, Johnson left the lanes with a new career-high of 231 pins knocked down, ousting her previous high of 212, which she achieved on Dec. 5, 2010.

The Lady Bison also fell to unranked opponents New Jersey City (754-788), Stephen F. Austin (659-737), North Carolina A&T (1206-1261), and Bethune Cookman (975-1002) over the course of the weekend.

Howard will look to bounce back from their shutout trip and hope to close out their season on a high note as they travel to Perry Hall, Md. on Feb. 18 for the Morgan State Invitational.
