Washington, DC, Sept. 2---Jordan Sweeney came off the bench to score the game winning goal as visiting George Washington got by Howard University, 2-1 in a non-conference women’s soccer game at Greene Stadium. It was the Colonials’ first win of the season while the Lady Bison remained winless.
Sweeney’s goal came in the 85th minute of the contest off an assist from Ina Kain. It was her only shot of the game.
GW (1-2) took a 1-0 lead at intermission, compliments of Lise
Backman on an unassisted goal at the 39:06 mark.
But Howard (0-2) finally got on the board and evened the score on a goal by Michelle Williston that hit the crossbar before landing in net at the 83rd minute.
George Washington out-shot, Howard, 18-5.
Despite the loss, the Lady Bison showed marked improvement from its first game when it was overwhelmed, 7-1 by Bucknell on Tuesday on the road.
Williston, a senior midfielder from Windsor, CT, attempted four of the Bison’s five shots. Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Walton had a fine day in goal with six saves.
Howard will try to get its first win of the season when it hosts Towson University at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Greene Stadium.
