Anderson's Goal In OT Gives Bison First Win
Washington, DC-October
20-Freshman DeLaine Anderson scored the game-winning goal
4 minutes into overtime to help Howard University stage a dramatic
comeback and defeat South
Carolina State, 4-3 in a women's United Soccer Conference game at
Greene Stadium. The win snapped an 18-game losing streak for
the Bison (1-13-0, 1-2 in the USC) dating back to last season.
Howard, which trailed the Bulldogs (3-12-0, 0-1 in the USC), 3-0 at the half, staged a furious rally led by Dolly Akingbohungbe. Natalie Williston started the comeback when she scored Howard's first goal in the 62nd minute. Aliyah Glen followed with a goal 8 minutes later on an assist from Meghan Nick.
Then Akingbohungbe scored on a corner kick in the 80th minute, sending the game into the extra period.
With momentum on their side, the Bison finally sealed the deal when Akingbohungbe set up Anderson with a well-placed corner kick that the freshman headed into the goal and gave Howard first-year head coach Erinn Garner her first career win.
"It's a relief to get the first win," said Garner, a former Bison player. "It's definitely good for the team; I am so happy for them. They have been through so much."
Howard has played most of the season undermanned with only 14 players in uniform.
The Bison will try to win its second straight when it hosts Francis Marion on Sunday at 1 pm in Greene Stadium.
