Howard Falls to Canisius

Boxscore

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Howard University women's soccer squad had its chances against Canisius Friday evening at Greene Stadium. Despite a number of good looks, however, the Lady Bison fell 3-1 in the non-conference decision.

The Griffs held a slim 14-10 advantage in shots but the damage came from shots on goal, as Canisius posted 11 SOG compared to four by HU. The Griffs also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Kasey Markowski and Sylvia Kowalski each scored in the 14th and 15th minutes, respectively, as Canisius took a quick 2-0 lead in the first half. Freshman Retha Koefoed made good on a foul and scored on a penalty kick in the 29th minute to close the lead to 2-1.

After a solid first half, Howard once again came out strong in the second but a third goal from Canisius (9-1-2) pushed the lead to two. In the 52nd minute, Makowski shot from the left side. Howard keeper Chanel Bell made a diving save but Kate Sloane was able to find the back of the net four seconds later to make it 3-1.

For the remainder of the contest the Bison fought to get back in it as the game became physical. However, despite a number of good attempts and corner kick opportunities for HU the end result was still a score of 3-1 at the final whistle.

Howard (1-7-2) hosts conference foe Delaware State on Sunday.
