Howard Held Off on Senior Day
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Howard was edged by South Carolina State, 1-0 in a Great West decision Friday afternoon at Greene Stadium. The senior day contest marked the final home game for Beatrice Charles, Samantha Cunningham, Aliyah Glenn and Brittany Miner.
HU allowed a goal late in the second half and could not find the equalizer in the 1-0 defeat. Chanel Bell five saves for Howard (4-9-2, 3-2-1 Great West). Brooke Ehinger tallied the game-winner in the 81st minute to lead South Carolina State (10-6-2, 3-2-1 Great West), while Alechia Brothers made 10 saves.
"Howard is the league's most underestimated team," South Carolina State coach Glad Bugariu said. "I see them easily going past the first round of the conference tournament. They have a good coach, their tactics are spot on, and have some very dangerous players. This is an excellent victory."
The Lady Bison had a scoring chance in the 29th minute when Retha Koefoed broke in behind the defense and had a header from the 10-yard line, but it sailed high. Cynthia Snyder's shot nearly a minute later in the 30th minute was also high.
In the 37th minute, Koefoed lofted a shot towards the net as Brothers was caught off her line, but the shot was blocked. Snyder tested Brothers four seconds later, but the shot was just left on the crossbar.
Snyder had the final opportunity of the game in the 87th minute, but a hard shot from 15-yards out sailed wide and South Carolina State held on for the win.
Howard next travels to Navy for its final regular season game on Sunday, Nov. 1. Game time against the Midshipmen is slated for 1 p.m.
