WASHINGTON, D.C. - Zania Barnum scored a first half goal and Alyssa Anderson added an insurance goal in the second half to lead George Mason to a 2-0 win over Howard University in a non-conference women’s match at Greene Stadium.
Barnum’s goal came off an assist from Camille Verscooris at the 35:05 mark. The Lady Bison (0-2) outshot the visitors, 4-2 but the Patriots (1-0) made the most of the one opportunity on Barnum’s goal.
“I thought that we had a better effort than our previous match (a 7-0 loss at Temple on Sunday),” said Howard Coach Brent Leiba. “We had our chances, but we did not make the most of them.”
George Mason’s second goal came at the 61:58 mark when Anderson got a nice feed from Omolyn Davis.
Retha Koefoed led Howard with three shots, including one on goal while Cheyra Bell was credited with three saves.
George Mason edged Howard, 9-7 in shots and 3-2 on corner kicks.
The Bison will try to get their first win when they travel to Staten Island, NY to take on Wagner College on Tuesday at 4 pm.
“I was proud of the effort,” said Leiba. “We have to continue to improve and stay disciplined in our techniques.”
