HOWARD WOMEN’S SOCCER CONCLUDES SEASON-OPENING WEEKEND WITH TWO LOSSES

Howard at Radford

Howard v. Lafayette

WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.howard-bison.com) – The Howard University women's soccer team closed out the season opening weekend with a pair of losses, falling to Radford (Friday, Aug. 17) 0-1 in Radford, Va., and suffering a 2-0 defeat in Washington, D.C., against Lafayette (Sunday, Aug. 19).

In their season opener of the 2012 season HU fell 1-0 to the Raiders of Radford.

"We had a lot of stops, we were fantastic in the first half," said HU head women's soccer coach Brent Leiba.  "Despite dropping out of our system in the second half, we still played solid defense."

Sophomore goalkeeper Kyra Dickinson stopped 24 Radford attempts on the evening, while notching eight saves.

"Kyra is a fantastic keeper despite her injury and limited mobility" said Brent.

RU clutched the game-winning goal in double-overtime.

HU continued action on Sunday, against Lafayette in Greene Stadium.

"Unlike Friday, we couldn't find our rhythm to put a half together," said Brent.

Lafayette defeated the Lady Bison 2-0 with a goal in the first half and a final goal in second half in under 30 seconds of play.

"They (Lafayette) were in good positioning when they notched that goal," said Brent.

Continuing from Friday's performance, Dickinson stopped 22 attempts will tallying 10 saves.

HU returns to action on Wednesday, Aug. 22 against Loyola (Md.) in Baltimore, Md., at 7:00 p.m.

"Going forward we need to get back to basics," said Brent.  "During the next few practice sessions we will work on technical skills, decision making, positioning, and being disciplined."
