Lady Bison impressive at Eastern Collegiate Tournament
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Howard women's tennis got off to a strong start this past weekend as they competed in the annual Eastern Collegiate Tournament in West Point, N.Y. The tournament, hosted by the United States Military Academy, was held on Sept. 14-16.
Freshman Alyssa Works was impressive on the first day as she defeated Army's Patty Vollmer 6-3, 7-6 (6) and Ashle Harper of St. John's, 6-4, 6-2 before falling to 6-1, 7-5 to Emily Mannix (UMBC) in the semifinal round.
Michelle Gee made it to the quarterfinals of the third singles consolation round before falling 8-6 to Seton Hall's Amanda El-Tobgy.
Jasmine Smith also had a good outing as she defeated Jennifer Cusak of Providence, 6-3, 6-3 before falling 6-3, 6-1 to Adrienne Markison (Quinnipiac) in the next round.
In doubles action, Courtney Dorsey and Laura Marin defeated non-conference foes from Niagara, Seton Hall and Connecticut before falling 8-4 in the semifinals to Cantynce Boney and Masha Pozar (UMASS).
Whitney Ambush and Jorden Shaw downed Amanda Goldberg and Jinny DeCarlos (Farleigh Dickinson) 8-3 before dropping an 8-2 second round decision to Army's Anne Hang and Robie Vernono.
The Lady Bison will return to action on Sept. 29-30 at the Wolfpack Invitational in Raleigh, N.C.
