Smith Wins Flight Title at Wolfpack Invitational
RALEIGH, N.C. - The Howard women's tennis team had a good outing at the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational as Jasmine Smith won the Flight B1 Singles title. The three day tournament was hosted by N.C. State on Sept. 21-23.
Smith earned the title after defeating Pittsburgh's Elizabeth Adams by scores of 7-6 (4), 7-5. She downed Scarlett Alfonzo (Campbell) 6-2, 6-4 in the semi-final round and James Madison's Anna Khoor, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-0 in the second round en route to the victory.
Alyssa Works won her opening round match of the Flight C1 bracket after downing Kayley Wahl 6-3, 7-6 (1) but fell 6-0, 6-3 to West Virginia's Alexandra Kaluza in the next round.
Whitney Ambush, Courtney Dorsey, Jorden Shaw and and Aja Wright all played well but fell in the first match of the consolation bracket in each of their respective flights.
Michelle Gee received a bye into the final round of the B2 consolation bracket before losing 6-2, 6-0 to East Carolina's Jessica Cook.
In doubles action, Marian Blancada and Jorden Shaw advanced to the championship of the A3 consolation round before falling 8-0 to Burton and Pilsbury of West Virginia.
Laura Marin and Courtney Dorsey received a bye into the semi-finals of the A1 consolation round before retiring and losing their decision to East Carolina's Gol and Soler.
Works and Wright dropped an 8-3 contest to Nimita and Jain (James Madison) in the second round of the A2 flight consolation bracket.
The Lady Bison return to action on Oct. 12-14 at the Hampton Roads Invitational.
