Lady Bison Fall in Extra Sets

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a battle against cross-town rival George Washington, the Howard women's tennis team put up a strong fight as the Bison (1-4) pushed the Colonials (3-1) into extra sets before eventually falling, 5-2.

Howard stepped up first with the 1-0 lead after Michelle Brown and Katelyn Stokes paired up to knock off GW in an early doubles match. Sophomore Brittney Morgan and freshman Brooke Hawthorne also found a way to top Colonial captains Julia Blakeley and Leah Pascarella in doubles competition. Morgan and Hawthorne finished off GW in a tiebreaker match, 9-8 (8-6).

The Bison were unable to fulfill a sweep in the doubles matches as senior Alyssa Works and junior Ashley Moore were taken down by George Washington, 9-8 (7-5).

Momentum wouldn't hold up with the Bison as they fell to victim to GW, losing thee matches that were pushed into deciding third sets. Hawthorne was the only member of the Bison to pull out a win against George Washington in singles competition after swiftly knocking off her opponent (6-1, 6-4).

The Howard women's tennis team will look to rebound from their loss as they take on St. John's (N.Y.) on Saturday, Feb. 12. Visit Howard-Bison.com for the latest news and results regarding Howard tennis.
