ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Howard Women’s Tennis Team finished an outstanding weekend at the Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational on Sunday. The six team tournament consisted of Loyola, Monmouth, US Naval Academy, Rider, Towson and Howard. Howard competed in all six event finals, winning four flights. Navy proved to be the main obstacle in the Lady Bison’s path.
“I am very pleased with how our ladies are competing. “ said head coach Larry Strickland. “They have a bull’s eye placed squarely on their backs after an outstanding 2009-10 season, and so far they have met the challenge. They are continuing to improve.”
Howard placed players in the finals of the singles A , B, C and D flights, lead by co-captain Michelle Brown who defeated Navy’s Kourtney Howell in the A finals; 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Brooke Hawthorne continues to impress - winning the B flight finals over Navy’s Emani Decquir - 6-2, 6-3. In the C flight, freshman Katelyn Stokes won a hard fought three setter over Navy’s Darien Sears; 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7). Junior Anne Akhimien was downed in the D flight finals by Towson’s Nisha Shah; 6-4, 6-1.
The team of Alyssa Works and Stokes won the B flight doubles defeating the team of Aandria Carr and Nisha Shah from Towson, 8-1. Brown and partner Ashley Moore lost the A flight doubles finals to Kourtney Howell and Amanda Griffin, 8-1.
Lady Bison Tennis takes a break next weekend before heading to the Old Dominion Invitational from October 8-10 in Newport News, Virginia.
