HOWARD GIVES VALIANT EFFORT BUT FALLS SHORT IN MEAC WOMEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP
RALEIGH, N.C.,April 15, 2012- The Howard University women's tennis team battled and scrapped their way through an injury-plagued season, but in the end, South Carolina State University proved to be too much as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Bison, 4-1 to win the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Tennis Championship title on Sunday morning at Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh N.C. The title was the eighth consecutive and ninth overall for the Lady Bulldogs.

Raleigh, NC—April 13---Kately Stokes, Howard’s Number 1 singles player, posted a win over Katerina Szaboova that proved to be the deciding factor as the Lady Bison, the Number 4 seed, defeated Bethune Cookman, 4-3 in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s and women’s tennis championship at the Millbrook Tennis Center.

The Howard University women’s tennis team will open play on Friday when it takes on Bethune Cookman at 8:30 am in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tennis Championships at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, NC.

Bison Women Dominate Towson 6-1
The Bison women's tennis team were back in action on Saturday against the Towson Tigers. The Lady Bison captured the first point winning two of the three doubles at number 1 Katelyn Stokes and Brittney Morgan beat Towson's Ayana Dow and Ariel Burke 9-7 and at 3 doubles Brooke Hawthorne and Michelle Brown downed Nisha Shah and Carly Easdale 8-3.

Women's Tennis Defeat St. John's 4-3
QUEENS, N.Y. - The Lady Bison Tennis Team won a hard fought four hour battle with St. Johns. Howard won the doubles point with wins at No. 1. Brittney Morgan and Katelyn Stokes beat Nevena Selacovic and Diamond Adams 8-6, while Michelle Brown and Brooke Hawthorne sealed the point at No. 3 doubles with an 8-3 victory over Joanna Zwinlulis and Terri Thomas.

Lady Bison Taken Down by Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The Lady Bison tennis took on the 40th ranked University of Maryland Terps at the College Park Tennis Center. Maryland won all nine matches in a highly contested team match. The Terps behind the 37th ranked doubles team of Cristina Stancu and Welma Luus won all three doubles matches. Maryland earned straight set victories at No. 1 and 2 singles led by Stancu, ranked at 28th in the nation.

W. Tennis Edged By ODU in 2012 Opener
The women's tennis team opened the Spring 2012 campaign with a close loss, 4-3 to Old Dominion Saturday in Norfolk, Virginia. The Lady Bison who are picked to win MEAC North had wins at 2, 3 and 6 singles. Sophomore All Conference, Katelyn Stokes collected the first point at number 2 singles beating ODU's Juliana Pire 6-3, 6-4, followed by a win at 3 singles by sophomore Brooke Hawthorne over Melissa Esnal Olbuin 6-4, 6-1, the Howard scoring was rounded out with a win at 6 single when senior Anne Akhimien defeated Faith Atiso in a hard fought three setter, 6-2, 5-7,6-4. The Lady Bison are in action again Tuesday January 24, 2012 at 1:00pm against the University of Maryland at the College Park Tennis Center.

W. Tennis Achieve Success at Bill and Sandra Moore Invite
ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Women’s Tennis Team had an outstanding weekend at the eight team, Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy. With just four entries due to injuries the Lady Bison won four of the six events contested. The doubles team of Anne Akhimien and Katelyn Stokes won the B Doubles over the Naval Academy team of Dye Das and Gabby Winter in the finals 8- 4 on Saturday. In Sunday’s singles finals, sophomore Katelyn Stokes won the A flight beating teammate junior Brittney Morgan in a shorten match 8-6. Freshman Talia Johnson playing her first collegiate competition won the C flight besting Towson’s Ayana Dow in a match tiebreaker 6-7(2), 6-4, 1-0(10-5). Senior Anne Akhimien easily beat Towson’s Judy Mont in the C flight finals 6-3, 6-0. The Lady Bison will be back in action October 7th at the Hampton Roads Invitational in Newport News, Virginia.
