TWO LADY BISON PROVIDE NOTEWORTHY PERFORMANCES AT USTA/ITA

BLACKSBURG, VA. (www.howard-bison.com)  – Two members of the Howard University women's tennis team stood out during the 2012 USTA/ITA Regional Championship in Blacksburg, Va., on Oct. 19-23.

With two consecutive fall tournament championship wins, HU junior Katelyn Stokes continued successful performance by conquering the No. 9 seed and 2011 nationally ranked Josefin Hjertquist of Virginia Commonwealth University in three sets, 3-6; 6-4; 6-3.  She continued her win streak with a 6-1; 6-1 victory over Taylor Pinchoff of James Madison University during the Round of 16.  Nonetheless, Stokes play ended with a 6-3; 6-4 loss to Raluca Mita of Virginia Tech University.

In her USTA/ITA debut, Howard freshman Umarah Mughee attained her first win with a 6-4; 1-6; 6-4 victory over Morgan State's No. 1 Margarita Belyakova.  Her first tournament concluded with a 4-6; 6-0; 6-0 loss to Kai Broomfield of Marshal.

The Howard women's tennis team jumps back into action with regular-season play on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va.
