WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Howard University Volleyball team snapped its nine-game skid with wins over Navy and Hartford at the Kristen Dickmann Memorial Tournament this weekend. Tosin Elebute was named all-tournament for her impressive performance. The team is back in action on Fri. Sep. 24 when it hosts George Washington at Burr Gym beginning at 7 p.m.
The Lady Bison dropped a 3-0 decision to MEAC opponent Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday, but came out with fire on Saturday to win 6-of-9 sets played.
"These were greats wins for us today," said head coach Dawn Barnes. "I am very pleased in the direction we are heading."
In the 3-1 win over Navy (25-22, 25-23, 24-26, 25-21) three Bison finished with double-digit kills. Elebute led the offensive attack with a game-best 18 kills. Keri Partridge finished 14-of-23 for a .435 hitting percentage, while Gabrielle Martin went 10-for-22 for a .318 clip. Nicole Brown and Jiyana Brown had solid performances on defense finishing with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
The team finished 59-for-131 for a .275 kill percentage.
"All in all, it was a group effort," said Barnes. "There was something that stood out with everybody today."
In the second match against Hartford, Elebute recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Gazelle Artois was one dig shy of a double-double with a game-high 14 kills and nine digs. Martin and Jiyana Brown had 13 kills apiece. "There were moments of greatness," commented Barnes. Jasmine King assisted on 36 of the 62 total Bison kills.
"My girls played some great volleyball," said an enthusiastic Barnes. "It was good to finally put it all together."
With the victories, the Bison improve to 3-12 on the season.
