HU Starts MEAC Play With a Win

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Howard Univ. volleyball team began its MEAC slate with a 3-1 victory over Coppin State on Friday at Burr Gym. The Bison improve to 4-14 on the season and a 1-0 in conference play.

The first set was a see-saw affair as the Lady Bison edged the Eagles 25-23. In the second set, Howard battled back to win 30-28. Howard struggled to get things going on the offensive end in the third set as Coppin State set the tempo early to cruise to a 25-15 win to force another game. The Lady Bison came out with fire in the final set - behind Tosin Elebute's five kills - to cruise to a 25-10 victory.

In the third set, Howard finished with a season-best .600 hitting percentage. For the game, the team went 53-125 for a .206 clip.

"It was a great game," said head coach Dawn Barnes. "We had great execution, great plays by Elebute. There were some key digs by Nicole Brown and Jiya Brown. Jasmine King did a great job with her set distributions."

Elebute finished with game-best 22 kills and a .318 kill percentage. Gazelle d'Artois and Gabrielle Martin had seven kills apiece. Taylor Johnson and Keri Partridge chipped in with six kills each. Jasmine King dished out 28 assists. Nicole Brown lead the defense with 15 digs.

"Overall it was a great team effort," said Barnes.

HU is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Morgan State at Burr Gym beginning at 3 p.m.
